The International Tarot Foundation
Code of Ethics
Purpose of This Code
This Code of Ethics exists to ensure that Tarot is taught, practised, and shared with integrity, responsibility, and respect.
All students, graduates, and mentors are expected to uphold these principles in study and professional practice.
Tarot is a tool for insight, reflection, and guidance — not control, dependency, or prediction of absolute outcomes.

1. Respect for Free Will
Tarot readings must always honour the free will and autonomy of the querent.
-
Readers do not tell clients what they must do
-
Tarot is offered as guidance, not instruction
-
The querent remains responsible for their own decisions
Tarot supports empowerment, not dependency.

2. Scope of Practice
Students and certified readers understand that Tarot:
-
is not a substitute for medical, legal, financial, or psychological advice
-
must not be used to diagnose illness, predict death, or replace professional care
When appropriate, readers should encourage clients to seek qualified professional support.

3. Emotional and Psychological Care
Tarot can touch sensitive areas of life. Ethical readers:
-
approach readings with care, compassion, and grounded presence
-
avoid fear-based language or dramatic prediction
-
do not exploit vulnerability, grief, or distress
Readers must remain aware of their own limits and refer clients onward when a situation is beyond their competence.

4. Confidentiality
All readings and shared personal information are treated as confidential.
-
Client details are not shared without permission
-
Student work and assessments are respected as private
-
Any teaching examples are anonymised unless consent is given

Trust is foundational to ethical Tarot practice.

5. Professional Boundaries
Clear boundaries protect both reader and querent.
-
Readers do not foster emotional dependence
-
Dual relationships are handled with care and transparency
-
Power imbalances are acknowledged and respected
Mentorship is supportive, not controlling.

6. Honesty and Integrity
Ethical Tarot practice requires honesty.
-
Readers do not exaggerate abilities or guarantee outcomes
-
Certification represents competence, not superiority
-
Marketing and communication must be truthful and respectful
Tarot is practised with humility, not ego.

7. Respect for Diversity
Tarot is inclusive and respectful of all individuals.
-
No discrimination based on race, gender, sexuality, religion, culture, age, or ability
-
Readings are adapted sensitively to cultural and personal context
Diversity enriches Tarot practice and learning.

8. Ongoing Learning and Self-Reflection
Ethical Tarot readers commit to continued growth.
-
reflecting on their practice
-
recognising bias and projection
-
remaining open to learning
Self-awareness is a core ethical responsibility.

9. Responsibility of Certification
Certification from this school signifies:
-
demonstrated understanding of Tarot principles
-
ethical awareness
-
readiness to practise responsibly
It does not guarantee employment, fame, or mastery, but reflects a commitment to ethical Tarot practice.

10. Accountability
Students and graduates are expected to:
-
uphold this Code of Ethics
-
accept feedback with openness
-
address ethical concerns when they arise
Serious ethical breaches may result in review or withdrawal of certification.
